It was 11:15 P.M. on a freezing cold Christmas Eve as the family was getting ready to go to midnight Mass, when the father told the rest of the family to go on to Church themselves. He was going to stay home because he really could not understand how such a great and powerful God of the universe could even think about becoming a lowly human being, let alone actually doing it. So they left without him and he settled down in his chair and began reading. Suddenly, there was a tapping at the big picture window. At. First, he couldn’t see anything or anyone there. But there it was again. This time he noticed some small birds flying against the glass. Apparently the light had attracted them and they wanted to get out of the raw weather. The man had a feeling of compassion for the birds and decided to open his front door and let the birds come into the hallway where they could be warm. When the birds would not come into the house, he thought that maybe by putting some bread crumbs on the rug, he might entice them to come in. Still no success. He began to reason that, of course the birds would not enter the house - they didn’t belong there. He ran to the barn and threw open the doors and turned on the lights and waited. The birds flew around but would not enter even though it was the best thing for them in these conditions. He went out and shouted and tried to shoo them in, but they just did not, and could not understand! As he pondered the problem, he had a sudden inspiration. The little birds simply could not relate to this loving gesture! BUT, what if HE could become a bird, then the little birds could both understand and believe in him! As he ran to the car, he could be heard saying, “I’m coming, Jesus, and thank you for showing me about Yourself.”
